Single-phase power delivers electricity down one active line and is what almost every Australian home runs on. Three-phase uses three separate active lines instead of one, giving you roughly three times the capacity at your switchboard. It's not 'stronger' electricity — it's simply a lot more capacity, which lets heavy equipment, multiple appliances or fast EV charging run without overloading the supply — see our EV charger installations page if that's what's driving the upgrade.

The easiest way is to check your switchboard and meter — three-phase properties have three active fuses or breakers (often labelled red, white and blue) instead of one, and a meter marked for three-phase supply. If you're not sure, we can check for you, and it's also worth checking your last electricity bill, which usually states the supply type.

Most of the cost isn't labour — it's fixed third-party fees. The distributor (Powercor) charges an application and connection fee, a Licensed Electrical Inspector must sign off the work, and a dedicated truck appointment is needed to change the supply at the street. Those third-party costs are largely fixed regardless of who does the work, which is why three-phase upgrades cost more than typical electrical jobs.

On-site work is usually completed within a day once everything's arranged, but the project itself typically takes a few weeks from start to finish. Most of that time is the distributor's scheduling — Powercor needs to book a truck appointment to change the street supply, and that's largely outside our control. We manage the whole process and keep you updated at each step.

Often, yes. Your existing switchboard and meter panel are usually replaced as part of a three-phase upgrade, since they need to be rated for the new supply.
