Three-Phase Power Upgrades in Geelong
Most homes run on single-phase power — one active supply line carrying everything the house needs. Three-phase power uses three separate active lines instead of one, delivering roughly three times the capacity at your switchboard. It isn't 'better' electricity, just a lot more of it, supplied in a way heavy equipment and high-draw appliances can use properly. LJ Electrical Group carries out three-phase power upgrades across Geelong and the Bellarine — from Belmont and Highton to Grovedale, Waurn Ponds, South Geelong and Armstrong Creek.
Three-phase is generally for properties with genuinely heavy electrical demand: a workshop running machinery or welding gear, a fast 22kW EV charger, a pool and spa combination, or a big extension or granny flat planned down the track. If your switchboard is already straining on single-phase, a three-phase upgrade gives you real headroom instead of constantly juggling what's switched on at once.
Signs your property may need three-phase power
- Large machinery or welding gear in a workshop
- Multiple air conditioners running at once
- A fast 22kW EV charger
- A pool and spa combination
- Ducted heating plus induction cooking
- Lights dimming or breakers tripping when heavy appliances start
- Planning a large extension or granny flat
What a three-phase upgrade involves
- Assessment of your current supply and switchboard capacity
- Application to the electricity distributor (Powercor) on your behalf
- Coordination of the distributor's truck appointment
- Mains upgrade to carry the extra supply
- New three-phase switchboard and meter panel
- Licensed Electrical Inspector (LEI) sign-off
- Full testing and a Certificate of Electrical Safety
Three-phase upgrade pricing
- Three-phase power is one of the larger jobs we take on — this isn't a small, quick upgrade.
- A significant portion of the cost is fixed, paid directly to the electricity distributor and the Licensed Electrical Inspector, before any of our own labour begins.
- These upgrades run into the thousands rather than the hundreds, so it pays to go in with the right expectation.
- Every property's supply, distance and switchboard condition are different — which is why we quote after assessing your site rather than publishing a flat rate.
- What determines the price: distance from the street to the switchboard, whether the mains need replacing, overhead versus underground supply, switchboard and meter panel condition, and distributor requirements.
- We always quote fixed and upfront after assessing the property.
- Timeline is largely set by the distributor — once Powercor's truck appointment is booked, on-site work is usually done in a day, but their scheduling typically adds the most time to the overall project.
What's included in your quote
Our three-phase quote is all-in, not a base rate with extras added afterwards. We handle all the distributor paperwork and applications on your behalf, from the initial application through to the truck appointment and inspection sign-off. Your quote includes:
- The distributor application and paperwork
- Coordination and the distributor's truck appointment
- The Licensed Electrical Inspector sign-off
- All labour and materials
- Testing
- A Certificate of Electrical Safety
A significant portion of that cost is fixed, paid to the distributor and the Licensed Electrical Inspector rather than to us — not our margin — which is why a three-phase upgrade costs more than most electrical work.
What customers say about our switchboard, meter box & supply work
- ★★★★★
I had Zack come to my house to install sub-mains for my new swimming pool, what an experience. Completed the work within set timeframe and helped me with earthing requirements for the fencing around the pool. Could not recommend high enough.
Troy Malthouse - ★★★★★
We couldn't be happier with the quality of work Zack did on the installing our spa. Running power to the site was seamless and a really neat finish and the meter box got a complete update as part of the overall process. Pricing was incredibly competitive and with no issues at all since we'll turn to Zack for any future work we ever need. A pleasure to deal with.
