But under Victorian regulations, any significant electrical work — new circuits, a rewire, solar or an EV charger — normally triggers a requirement for a compliant switchboard with safety switches. Older ceramic-fuse boards also carry real safety risks, so most homeowners upgrade well before it becomes compulsory.

Ceramic fuses are the round porcelain fuse holders found in older switchboards, common in homes built before the 1980s. They're slower to trip than modern circuit breakers, can be rewired with the wrong-rated wire (a fire risk), and don't include safety switches. Circuit breakers and RCDs cut power almost instantly, giving far better protection against electric shock and fire.

It can. Some insurers ask about your switchboard when you take out or renew a policy, and a few may adjust premiums, add conditions, or query a claim if an outdated ceramic-fuse board contributed to an electrical fault or fire. Yes, we ask that someone over 18 is home, since we'll need access to the switchboard and will briefly turn off power to the property. Most domestic switchboard upgrades are completed within a day. We'll let you know in advance roughly when the power will be off so you can plan around it — the outage is usually only for the changeover itself.
