Choosing the Right Electrician in Geelong: 7 Questions to Ask
Electrical work is one of the few home jobs where a poor choice can literally be fatal — or void your insurance. Whether you found someone through a directory, a mate, or a hipages lead, ask these seven questions before you let anyone touch your wiring.
1. Are you a licensed electrician (and what’s your REC number)?
In Victoria, electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician, and electrical contracting must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC). A legitimate business will give you their REC number without hesitation — ours is REC 36620, registered with Energy Safe Victoria. You can check any number on the ESV website.
2. Are you fully insured?
Ask about public liability insurance. If something goes wrong on your property, you want to know they’re covered.
3. Will you provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety?
For prescribed work, Victorian electricians must supply a Certificate of Electrical Safety (CoES). If someone dodges this question, walk away — it’s your proof the work was done and (for some jobs) independently inspected.
4. Is the quote fixed and upfront?
Hourly “we’ll see how we go” pricing is where bills balloon. We provide fixed, upfront quotes so you know the cost before we start.
5. Are you actually local?
A genuinely local electrician gets to you faster and won’t add a travel surcharge. We’re based in Belmont and cover Geelong and the Bellarine with no travel fee — from Highton to Armstrong Creek.
6. Do you do this type of work regularly?
Switchboard upgrades, EV charger installs and commercial work all need specific experience. Ask whether the job you need is bread-and-butter for them.
7. Can you show reviews or references?
Look for consistent, recent, genuine reviews. We’re proud to be 5★ rated and a member of Master Electricians Australia.
The short version
A safe, fair electrician is licensed, insured, gives you a certificate, quotes upfront, and is genuinely local. If you’d like an electrician who ticks all seven boxes, contact LJ Electrical Group or call 0433 444 331.
